Frequently Asked Questions

  • We've moved away from offering trial lessons because we believe a single lesson is not sufficient to form an informed opinion of the training quality or fit with the program.

Enrollment at House of Combat is always monthly. You will have more than just a single trial to understand if you like it here without having to worry about being on the hook for any sort of annual contract. Our policy allows you to cancel anytime with 14 days' notice.

  • Yes! Our small group classes are designed to welcome beginner and advanced students. The instructor will work with you/your child more closely during the first few classes.

  • No. We believe in earning your business with every class.

Your membership begins on the date you enroll with automatic billing for a 12-month term.

Need to cancel? Just send us an email to provide 14 days’ notice before your next bill. No hassle - promise! We want you to train because you want to not because you have to.

  • Good news! You don't need to be working out regularly in order to join these classes. As long as you don't have any medical conditions that prevent you from participating you are good to go. We have students of every age and body type getting together to practice self-defense and martial arts.

  • Krav Maga: Dress in comfortable, well-fitting athletic wear without zippers or sharp components such as a T-shirt & sweatpants/track pants. Please bring a pair of either boxing or MMA gloves. Men ages 12+ require groin protection.

    HOC recommended gear:

    Kids Boxing Gloves

    Adult MMA Gloves

    Groin Protector

BJJ: You will need a designated BJJ Gi (training uniform). Uniforms are available for purchase at House of Combat.

  • Throughout your training, you'll earn belts to mark your rank as you progress in skill level.

Attendance, attitude, technique, and time, are the primary factors that influence your progress through the ranks.

Krav Maga & BJJ belt gradings are conducted separately 2x/year. There is no fee for grading. We believe belts and stripes should be earned based on attendance and skill—not paid for.

  • No need to commit to a specific day and time. Use our flexible monthly membership to reserve and attend classes each week whenever works best for you and your family.

  • Learning self-defense is just like learning to swim. After a few months of practice, you might feel comfortable treading water, but it will take time before you can confidently swim laps and survive being suddenly thrown into the water.

Self-defense skills must be applied under significant stress, requiring an automatic, muscle memory response to be effective. It takes a significant investment of time for students to confidently master these life-saving skills. You can build meaningful skills and confidence with a year of consistent training (2-3 times per week) or two years (once per week).

Achieving proficiency is marked by earning a black belt once students can demonstrate high level skills skills including comprehensive weapons defense + sparring and grappling. This requires more than a few years of dedicated training. Remember, any training is better than none, so the most important thing is to get started.

  • At this time, we do not offer NoGi classes for kids or adults. We prefer to focus on Krav Maga and traditional gi BJJ for comprehensive self defense instruction.

Contrary to popular belief, NoGi does not offer any advantage for self defense though some do prefer this style for sport and competition.

My kids love going to House of Combat. They are learning Krav Maga which is great for self defence and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is awesome for stress relief for kids as they learn to tackle each other in a safe and fun way. Joel is a great instructor: firm yet funny. I can tell kids like and respect him.
