Hey there,

As a martial arts school owner, I intentionally avoid using fear and pain points in our marketing. I believe love is a more powerful motivator than fear. Love of life, of people, of health. Love of how it feels to have a strong body and mind.

While many girls and women train at our school, self-defence training is still an afterthought for MOST women (and parents of girls). It's something to "fit in" during the off-season between dance and competitive gymnastics—instead of being an essential in the way so many consider swim lessons to be (myself included).

As a 17-year-old girl, I was assaulted on a crowded TTC bus by a young man. I barely understood what was happening and certainly lacked the confidence or skills to address it. I didn't tell anyone for years. He probably did it again the next day.

I want a world where girls and women are NOT the default victims. No more 1 in 4. I believe the majority who don't bother training believe it won't matter. This is what fear does. It paralyzes from taking action. It's created a collective victim mindset when nothing could be further from the truth! Every female who trains in martial arts is a force to be reckoned with. Taekwondo, Krav Maga, Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu—all simply routes for how we become our own protectors. I'm still not sure how we change this. But it starts with talking about it.

I want you to believe in yourself. I believe in you.
