The Best Meal Delivery Service in the GTA? Why I Only Use One.
Athlete’s Kitchen is the Best Meal Delivery Service for Performance
I wish I could write a comprehensive comparison review about the best meal delivery services in the GTA, but the truth is, I’ve only ever stuck with one. Over and over, I keep coming back to Athlete's Kitchen.
Most meal prep services fail the specific standards I need as an athlete competing in a weight-class sport. When you’re juggling training, recovery, and a scale that doesn't lie, "good enough" food doesn't cut it. Athlete’s Kitchen was created to solve this problem (it’s literally in the name). Here is the breakdown of why this service checks the boxes for my BJJ goals, along with a few things I’d love to see them change.
Gluten-Free and allergy-friendly meal delivery in toronto
While I don’t always eat strictly gluten-free in my off-season, I’ve found that sticking with GF carbs is a game-changer when I’m in a camp. It helps me manage inflammation, reducing injury risk while cutting weight—two essential reasons why I outsource my cooking in the first place. Knowing that the entire menu is gluten-free removes the mental load of checking every single meal.
Recently, I also reached out to the team to ask about allergy safety and cross-contamination risk to determine if the meals are safe for my son, who has anaphylactic nut and sesame allergies. They were very helpful, and my son has eaten several meals since with no reaction (his favourite is the bolognese). If you are dealing with life-threatening allergies, you’ll want to reach out directly and make a determination based on your personal comfort level.
Macro Tracking Made Easy: MyFitnessPal Integration
As a BJJ athlete competing in the female Light Feather category, my nutrition has to be surgical. I naturally sit around 122 lbs, and I need to hit 115 lbs for tournament day so I can make weight once wearing my gi uniform and belt.
I usually start my track 60–90 days out. I lose the first four pounds through a slow, controlled caloric deficit, and the final two come off via a specific "gut cut" protocol (more on that coming soon). This allows me to compete at my strongest without resorting to intense cardio, saunas, or water loading—all of which are performance killers for same-day weigh-ins. Because Athlete's Kitchen has its meals pre-loaded into MyFitnessPal, I don’t have to play "guess the macros." I just search, log, and get back to training.
Taste Test: My Top 5 Menu Recommendations
Healthy shouldn't mean bland. If I'm paying for a service, I want restaurant-quality flavours that make a deficit feel less like a chore. Here are my current favourites:
Lamb Sheftalia from Athelte’s Kitchen
Duck Breast with Blueberry Sauce: Feels incredibly indulgent for a "prep" meal.
Lamb Sheftalia: Lamb cooked right is a favourite protein of mine. These Greek-inspired sausages come with a dairy-free tzatziki, and it’s just so delicious.
Turkey Breast with Cranberry Sauce: I’m a nostalgic girl! Will gladly eat a holiday dinner for lunch on a Tuesday after a two-hour Jiu-Jitsu session.
Crispy Maple Chicken with Potato Waffles: I dream of these potato waffles. I’d literally buy them frozen for my toaster if they were available. They have an equally delicious sweet potato waffle for the strict paleo crowd.
Chicken Pesto Stew with Brown Rice Fusilli: Hearty, comforting, and perfect for post-training recovery. I’ve tried to recreate this one at home, but it’s just not as good.
Areas for Improvement (The Cons)
To be fair, the company takes customer feedback seriously. Their side veggies used to be consistently undercooked, but they’ve made a complete turnaround and now deliver great roasted textures. However, there’s still room to grow:
Generosity with sauces: I understand that sauce usually equals hidden calories/fats, but I’d love slightly more generous sauce portions. I like my turkey dinner with a lot of cranberry sauce!
Customer Input: I’m sure they have data from orders, but I wish I could get a survey that would allow me to vote on my favourite meals and downvote the ones that didn’t sit right. I miss the bison steak with sauteed onions - please bring it back!
Packaging: AK recently switched to an eco-friendly tray that is both oven and microwave-safe and also compostable, but I just don’t buy it. I’ve tried heating it in the oven, and it smells like burning plastic. Instead, I opt to heat the food in a pan or, if I’m feeling lazy, on parchment paper. I don’t know if there’s any realistic solution for this, but I would appreciate more transparency and details on the packaging materials and safety testing.
Vegetarian Selection: Most AK meals center on meat, chicken, and pescatarian options, and the veg options for breakfast always include eggs. I like to include a hot veg-based meal in my rotation; otherwise, things start to feel heavy on my digestion. This would likely be lower protein than most of their meals, but I’d love to see a lentil bolognese or vegetable bean soup option. They used to have this option, but the flavour profiles were not popular, so I assume that’s why it was discontinued. I’d like to see it back and better than before.
Discount Code for Athlete’s Kitchen
I am a loyal customer, not an affiliate of Athlete’s Kitchen, and I pay full price for every single order. But I did reach out to the team and ask them for a discount code, which they generously provided - use this link for 10% off your first order.
