Krav Maga vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

What is Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a practical self-defense system developed in Israel, known for its focus on real-world situations and efficient techniques. Krav Maga also emphasizes simultaneous defense and attack movements.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting, known for using technique and leverage to overcome larger opponents.

Krav maga vs bjj for self-defense

You can read strong opinions about Krav Maga vs. BJJ on the pages of Reddit - usually expressed by uninformed individuals or sometimes by ones who exclusively practice either Krav Maga or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Shouldn’t any opinion that counts come from someone who has studied both?

The truth is: neither of these two systems is a complete fighting art. Keep reading if you’ve practiced either and you’ll quickly agree.

Let’s break it down:

Krav Maga

PROS

  • The only style with comprehensive and proven weapons defense and disarm

  • Krav Maga is the leading self-defence system employed by police and military forces worldwide

  • Most of the moves in Krav Maga (including strikes to the eyes and groin) are banned in every combat sport because they are so effective and dangerous

CONS

  • There will never be a Krav Maga competition as each move is designed to kill or paralyze in self-defense. Therefore despite realistic pressure drills, you cannot practice with 100% pressure.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

PROS

  • The only style that can offer 100% pressure while remaining relatively injury-free

  • Best style for ground fighting - where many altercations land

CONS

  • No weapons defense

  • The modern/sports style does not prepare you to take a punch—or defend one

  • Does not address multiple attackers

  • Fails to address the realities of a street fight without rules

There are many reasons to train in martial arts beyond self-defense, such as improved fitness, confidence, and mental health. Yet, these benefits are often directly tied to the underlying purpose of martial arts. Confidence and peace of mind come from your practical knowledge and ability to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The verdict: Krav Maga and BJJ complement each other. House of Combat incorporates authentic high-level instruction of Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a practical, well-rounded, and pressure-tested self-defense system.
